Every issue of every ski magazine has
some reference to Chamonix and usually the picture section includes a
picture from Chamonix. Chamonix is easily the most famous ski resort in
the world and so I decided to go there. It worked out that Heather had a
week vacation from school and so I took a week off of work. The first half
we planned to ski with her brother in Austria, but I was sick. There was
not much skiing but still much fun.
The second half of the week Heather and I trained to Chamonix and had the
times of our lives in the shadow of the tallest mountain in the Alps, Mont
Blanc, which is taller than Mt. Rainier. Here are the pictures.
We did go skiing one day to Davos,
but it was sort of a disaster. You can read about it in my Hearsay.

While getting better from being sick we slept a lot, read a lot, and
watched a lot of movies.

We did find the energy to go for a walk on Lake Constance.

Heather picked a gem of a chalet for us to stay in.

Our first day of skiing was up there in the clouds in Grands Montets.

We paid the extra money and walked the extra stairs to the highest I have
ever been in the mountains, over 10,000 feet.

Even though it was cloudy there were some amazing views. Mt. Blanc is
hidden behind that cloud.

That platform on the tip of the rock is where we just were.

I'm always impressed with Heather's skiing. She gets noticeably better
every time.

We skied by a glacier.

Grand Montets.

On Friday we went to Le Tour and the weather was awesome.

We had a lot of fun skiing through these trees.

Sometimes it was a bit of a squeeze.

Following my initiative we hiked a little peak to enjoy the view and some
chocolate. Europe's tallest peak, Mont Blanc is on the left and Chamonix
is in the valley below.

Another shot of Mont Blanc and Chamonix.

Our sun burnt selves went to our favorite bar, the Cybar, to watch the
'Prophecy' the sickest ski video I have ever seen and enjoy a beer.

One of the skiers from the movie was there. We met professional skier Kent
Kreitler (the guy on the left). Ben is the one on the right, a friend of
Heather's from Rennes that we skied with.

The worn skis are still holding up. That building in the background is
where Heather rented her skis.

My favorite part of the day was taking the tram to the top of that rock.

We ate dinner up there.

And had an awesome view of Mont Blanc. Notice all the glaciers. The
mountain looks a lot smaller in the picture but it is rising 12,000 feet
out of the valley.

Some more views from the top.

While waiting for the bus after the day of skiing Heather noticed this
cool looking church.
And then I had to go back to Munich. |
