For five days with Richard the guide,
Achilles the donkey driver, three donkeys, and a stray dog who decided to
join us, that we named Perro, Heather and I hiked the Santa Cruz trek in
the Cordillera Blanca Region of the Peruvian Andes. Many beautiful
mountains and waterfalls were seen.

Our hike began by going through this gorge.

The first day was relatively uneventful. This is near where we camped the
first day.

On our second day we had our first peak of a real mountain.

Perro the dog did an excellent job of fending of rogue domestic cattle for
us.

Another mountain.

Because the winter season was just ending there, all the rivers were very
swollen, making crossing this marshy area very difficult. Additionally, as
a result, everything was very green, there was lots of snow, and many
waterfalls.

This mountain is supposedly the inspiration for the mountain at the
beginning of all paramount movies. Not really the same angle, but
click here to see what I am talking
about.

We tired Perro out.

The Paramount mountain again.

A mountain just to the left of the Paramount. It seems to me like it
belongs in, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."

A view back down the valley that we had spent two days hiking through.

After hiking all day we showed up to our camp site to find that Achilles
had passed us and already setup our tents. Additionally, he had time to
catch a few fish in the lake, which we ate with dinner.
