This summer of the year 2002 Heather invited me to go to New Orleans with
her, her mom, and her brother. Considering my job status and my busyness
level, I joined them and made a vacation of it. Here are the best of the
pictures.
The first day was a Saturday and we toured the D-day museum and then took the street car to look at some big housed and to find a place to eat a lunch sandwich.
We then walked around the French Quarter and looked in the shops at masks, boas, pralines, and gator heads.
Here is all of us in front of the Saint Louis Cathedral in down town New Orleans on the Mississippi river. We went to the 6pm service there on Sunday the next day.
A classic steam powered paddle wheel boat on the Mississippi. Mark Twain.
Since it was a Saturday night we went to Bourbon Street and checked out the weekly party. Plenty of T&A, drunks, street artists, and partiers.
After breakfast at Arnauds we took a donkey and buggy ride around downtown. We are parked in front of one of the oldest buildings in town. It used to be a pirate hideout, but now it is just a bar.
It gets pretty damned hot in Louisiana, 101 degrees and high humidity. To cool off snow cones work well.
Rowrrr! On Monday we did the highlight of my trip. We went on a swamp tour and checked out the Bayous. For every gator that you see there are 50 more in the vicinity that you don't see. And to think it was water very similar to these that I learned to water-ski in 15 years ago in Louisiana.
A heron hiding out in the trees.
Good ol' bayou.
After the swamp tour we went to Heather's other aunt Jackie and we played in her pool. (Heather has 9 aunts and uncles on her mom's side.)
Tuesday we slept in an chilled at her aunt Diane's house. (Who, btw, we were staying with for the duration of the trip. Thanks for all the great food and room.) We also went to City Park. Heather and I climbed in this tree. That little kid had better be careful.
Wednesday we toured different plantations. This one we didn't actually go inside of, but we took pictures from the outside. It is called Oak Alley for obvious reasons.
Thursday, the 4th of July was the family reunion at Jackie's house. I had a great time swimming in the pool, eating Popeye's chicken, and meeting 100's of Heather's relatives. I was also able to take a picture of a dragon. Friday I bought some shrimp for my mom and I came home. |
